Africa-PressMozambique. Portugal is training four Mozambicans in classification and transparency in the diamond business as part of the African country’s efforts to enter the market for these gems worldwide, according to a document seen by Lusa.

The training is part of the demands of the Kimberley Process, an international mechanism that advocates transparency in business and combating the sale of diamonds mined in war zones and whose revenues are used to fund armed and illegitimate violence, the Mozambican government document stated.

The document said that five Mozambicans would travel to Thailand for training in identifying and assessing diamonds and gems to provide the country with the capacity to comply with the requirements of the Kimberley Process.

As part of Mozambique’s commitment to the Kimberley Process procedures, a mission from this entity will assess the degree of compliance of the African country with the internationally stipulated requirements for the diamond business.

To enter the diamond market, Mozambique has been interacting with authorities in Angola, South Africa, and Russia to exchange experiences with these three countries with extensive knowledge of the activity and relationship with the Kimberley Process.

The document also said that facilities are now ready for the Maputo diamond warehouse to operate. Several pieces of equipment for diamonds, precious metals, and gems have been purchased and installed in the laboratory by next week.
