Greater Maputo: Increase in ‘chapa’ fares imminent

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Chapa’ fares may rise in the Maputo metropolitan area on Monday, a necessity driven by escalating operating costs combined with the dissatisfaction of transporters in relation to the compensation allegedly promised by the government last year, a Noticias report reads.

The Union of Transporters of the Province of Maputo (UTRAMAP) note released yesterday indicates that the current tariff will be increased by seven meticais, following approval by the Maputo Municipal Assembly.

Noticias tried without success to contact UTRAMAP, but Maputo Road Transport Association (ATROMAP) president Baptista Macuvele confirmed the association’s intention to increase fares, adding that it would speak on the matter today.

“This tariff was approved last year, but the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) said that we could not apply it because it would have to disburse an amount for compensation. But it has not been paying the amount and, of the promised six months, we received only two,” he pointed out.
