Açucareira da Maragra may lay off more than half of permanent workers

Africa-Press – Mozambique. More than half the approximately 180 permanent workers at Açucareira da Maragra [Maragra Sugar Works] in Manhiça district, Maputo province, could be made redundant in the next few days.

The restructuring of the workforce, and even the possible indefinite closure of the company, follows the damage to equipment and loss of sugarcane caused by floods in February.

The managing director of Açucareira da Maragra, Filipe Raposo, told Radio Mozambique, said that a survey of the damage to machinery was currently under way, and that an internal restructuring was being considered.

Raposo said that up to 95% of the sugar cane had been lost, and that damage to equipment was estimated at around US$30 million.
