Residents of Paquite neighbourhood in Pemba, Cabo Delgado, are concerned about the water in the local drainage ditch, which has a colour “different than usual,” reads a Notícias report. The drainage ditch water has turned bright purple according to the photo brought by Notícias to illustrate this report.

Local official Amina Amade told journalists from the Provincial Nucleus of Escribas Ambiental, who went there this morning witness the phenomenon, that she did not know how to explain the occurrence or its possible effects on health.

She said that the this was first observed three months ago, and that she had informed the municipal authorities.

A team from the Centre for Water Hygiene and Medical Examinations was also on site, investigating the matter prior to devising appropriate interventions.
