Police to scan CCTV footage in latest Maputo kidnap investigation

Africa-Press – Mozambique. A 47-year-old businesswoman was kidnapped outside her premises in the centre of Maputo on Tuesday, a police source announced today, adding that the corporation has strong leads in the case.

“There are strong clues to be followed up on, because it is a place where many establishments have video surveillance [CCTV], and this footage is in the hands of the authorities,” police spokesman Leonel Muchina said.

According to Muchina, there are indications that the perpetrators of the crime had been following the routine of the woman, a Mozambican citizen of Indian descent.

Armed men seized the victim when she got out of her own car outside the company, took her into a vehicle and fled. The case is being investigated by the PRM and the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).

The crime took place only a few days after the Mozambican prime minister, Adriano Maleiane, announced in parliament advances in the formation of an anti-kidnapping unit designed to stem the wave of kidnappings targeting businessmen and their families.

The prime minister said that, since 2021, the country had registered 28 kidnapping cases, of which “15 cases have been fully clarified”. In her annual assessment of crime in the country, the Attorney General of the Republic, Beatriz Buchili, warned that some elements within the authorities may be involved in criminal networks.
