Africa-Press – Mozambique. President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi yesterday in Maputo met the British Minister of Development for Africa and the Commonwealth, Andrew Mitchell.

The British Minister of Development for Africa and the Commonwealth has been in Mozambique since Tuesday, in a visit aimed at strengthening cooperation between his country and Mozambique, with the emphasis on trade and climate change.

This Wednesday, Andrew Mitchell held a meeting behind closed doors with Mozambique’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Manuel Gonçalves, but the parties did not make any statements to the press.

Minister Mitchell was then received at the Presidency of the Republic, where he held talks with Filipe Nyusi.

“On this visit, I had the opportunity to visit partner projects, meet with businessmen who are looking for more opportunities, and I had the pleasure of addressing the British Prime Minister’s invitation to the President of the Republic to participate in the United Kingdom Africa Summit, which will take place next year,” Mitchell said.

The meeting also served to transmit details on the performance of British-funded projects in Mozambique.

“We also evaluated the business opportunities between Mozambique and the United Kingdom,” Minister Mitchell added. “During the meeting with the President, we discussed some regional challenges, business, cooperation with Zimbabwe and, of course, we congratulated Mozambique on its performance during its mandate as President of the United Nations Security Council.”

The visit, according to the British official, aims to strengthen cooperation with Mozambique.

“We also discussed the existing cooperation relationship between Great Britain and Mozambique and reaffirmed our commitment to continue to cooperate on trade, investment, the challenges of climate change and regional development.”

The United Kingdom is an important partner for Mozambique in the areas of infrastructure, education and humanitarian support.
