The increase in the frequency of circulation and number of terrorist elements sighted in various areas of Macomia district, Cabo Delgado province, continue to worry inhabitants returning from long exile in the district headquarters and in other points in the province, MediaFax reports.
Recently, there have been many reports of a perceived increase in the number of terrorists in the groups seen circulating in the villages of the administrative posts of Chai, Mucojo and Quiterajo.
The groups that circulate continue to spread messages of peace, trying to win the hearts and trust of the local population, but their underlying message is that the population should not collaborate with the Defence and Security Forces (FDS), and to position itself as a scout, passing on information on the deployment of government forces.
The big fear is that, as soon as the groups reach a certain size, they will launch large-scale attacks against Defence and Security Forces positions, which, in Macomia, includes some barracks.
In this regard, last week there were reports of the movement of a large number of terrorist groups in the Ntoni area, between Quiterajo and Pangane.
“What created more agitation in people is the large number of troops in these [terrorists], which grows day by day. This led many informal traders who were dedicated to the purchase and fishing of marine products in that area to leave for the district headquarters [Macomia] and the city of Pemba,” said a local source, classifying the situation as “of great concern”.
A week ago, it should be recalled, the governor of the province of Cabo Delgado paid a visit to Mocimboa da Praia and Macomia, visiting Pagani, in Mucojo in the latter. There, Valige Tauabo offered support in terms of fishing inputs.
