WHO general director praises hospital expansion scheme

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, welcomed on Friday in Maputo the government programme ‘One District, One Hospital’, recognising that investments in health are needed in the post-pandemic era.

“We agree that more investments are needed in health after Covid-19,” said Tedros Ghebreyesus, alluding to the meeting he held on Thursday with the president of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi.

The meeting, he said, served to discuss the government’s programme to set up health infrastructures from scratch, equipped with modern services to reduce the transfer of patients to a referral hospital.

The WHO Director-General explained that the meeting with the president allowed him to analyse the “necessary investments” for the implementation of the , ‘One District, One Hospital’” programme, of “basic health units through a new impact investment platform” in the health sector in Mozambique.

After the meeting with the head of state, Tedros Ghebreyesus also admitted the possibility of including Mozambique in the Malaria Vaccination Initiative as early as the first quarter of 2024.

The WHO Director-General was on a two-day working visit to Mozambique on Thursday and Friday.
