Africa-Press – Mozambique. Eight minors who were allegedly about to be trafficked to South Africa have been abandoned at the Ressano Garcia border post in Maputo province.
The minors, aged between 12 and 17, were allegedly being trafficked from the province of Inhambane by an unidentified man who, having arrived at the Ressano Garcia crossing point, abandoned them.
The minors were sent to the provincial Directorate for Gender Children, Women and Social Action in Maputo, and an investigation into the case is now in the hands of the provincial Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The head of the Children’s Department in Maputo, Hilário Vilanculos, indicated that this is the second case of minors abandoned by the border this year, another group of 16 minors having been abandoned by an alleged trafficker in the first half.
Vilanculos also reported that her department had recently received from immigration authorities in Namaacha, who were abandoned by their parents at the border in the course of their attempted crossing to neighbouring South Africa.
