Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mocímboa da Praia airfield in Cabo Delgado may reopen in the first quarter of next year, after a three-year closure due to terrorist attacks.

A deed of consignment and rehabilitation to this effect was signed this Tuesday in Mocímboa da Praia.

The financial administrator of Mozambique Airports, Saíde Júnior, said that the rehabilitation of the airport infrastructure aimed to restore its importance for the socio-economic development of the province and the country.

Rehabilitation works at the Mocímboa da Praia airfield will begin in the next few days and are set to last for two months in an initiative budgeted at around 15 million meticais (around US$235,308 at a current exchange rates) supplied by Mozambican Airports.

Saide Júnior said after signing the deed of assignment that the idea was to restore Mocímboa da Praia Airfield to how it was before, to accommodate tourists and the gas operations taking place in the neighbouring district of Palma.

Rehabilitation works on the 2,000 metre-long runway will be carried out by the Mozambican Civic Service.

Representing the Civic Service, Major General Ezequiel Muianga guaranteed after the signing that the infrastructure would be delivered within the agreed deadlines.
