Africa-Press – Mozambique. The U.S. Embassy recognizes the determination with which the people of Mozambique participated in the sixth multiparty municipal elections on October 11. The U.S. Embassy joined accredited national and international observers to follow the election process in 12 municipalities in northern, central, and southern provinces. Based on reports from U.S. Embassy and other observers, local media, party agents, election officials, and civil society organizations, voting day in the 65 municipalities was generally peaceful, but there are many credible reports of irregularities on voting day and during the vote tabulation process.
The National Elections Commission (CNE) must ensure all votes are counted accurately and transparently. We urge electoral authorities, local courts, and the Constitutional Council to take all complaints of irregularities seriously and to act on them impartially. A clean, transparent, and peaceful election process is essential to the future of Mozambique’s multiparty democracy.
