Deadline to appeal to the Constitutional Council ends today

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Political parties and other participants in the October 11th poll still have time to submit appeals regarding the results of the sixth local elections to the Constitutional Council (CC), should they wish to do so, Noticias reports this Tuesday.

Under the electoral law in force in the country, interested parties have up to five days, counting from the day of announcement of the official results by the National Elections Commission (CNE), to present all complaints about the process, a period that expires this Tuesday.

The results of the ballot are being widely contested by opposition political parties who allege serious defects in the conduct of the poll, especially during the intermediate count by the District Elections Commissions.

Renamo has in fact filed a contentious appeal with the district judicial courts in several local authorities and, having not been satisfied, appealed the judgements to the Constitutional Court, the highest level of electoral litigation in Mozambique.

According to Noticias, once the deadline for submitting appeals passes, the Constitutional Council will begin preparing rulings, validating and approving the electoral results, which must happen 20 days before the end of the term of office of the current municipal bodies.

These local elections saw Nova Democracia (ND), in its first participation in this type of poll, win seats in the Municipal Assembly of Gúruè, Zambézia province.
