Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican author Mia Couto hopes that the action of the country’s judicial bodies regarding electoral irregularities will show that the path to democracy is still open. “If the institutions – I am talking about the judiciary mainly, which will resolve this issue – if they assert themselves as an autonomous power, as a power that has distanced itself from political influences, etc … I think this could be a level of growth, could be a huge step for this country. It would be the first time – it is a test – it would be the first time that it clearly happens that, in a situation in which these two powers confront each other, the judicial power asserts itself with independence, with autonomy,” the renowned author said.
Despite the various disputes surrounding the local elections, Mia Couto views the process positively.
“We are experiencing here tense moments, very tense moments,… and we hope for the resolution to be an in-depth resolution. This is not just to resolve these elections only, to clarify the result of these elections, but to ensure that… people believe that the democratic path is possible, that voting is worth it, that transforming the country through a non-violent path is worth it; because, the path of violence, we have already verified that it leads to nothing else but more violence,” he said.
