Mozambique: Criminal proceedings begun against man caught in possession of over 70 kilos of drugs

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s Central Office for Combating Organized and Transnational Crime (GCCCOT) has opened a case against an individual caught red-handed in possession of 42 kilos of cocaine.

The arrested individual, of Mozambican nationality, was also found in possession of 34 kilos of amphetamine and four kilos of heroin.

According to a GCCCOT statement, the man was caught in March, in Mecufi district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, when he was transporting the substances in his vehicle.

The GCCCOT accuses him of being involved in the theft of those illicit substances, which led them to open another independent case for theft, among other crimes.

“While the accused was in pre-trial detention to clarify the facts, the court charged him with other illicit activities relating to money laundering and criminal conspiracy”, reads the GCCCOT note.

At the time, the court decided to deposit the drugs in the warehouse belonging to the provincial directorate of the Intelligence Service (SISE), “while investigations were underway to determine the origin of the substances and the true owners.”

Warehouse where drugs were stored set on fire

“While waiting for the substances to be incinerated, the Attorney-General’s Office learned that the warehouse where the drugs were stored had been set on fire. After carrying out an on-site investigation, it was found that the fire had been caused by unknown individuals, with the aim of seizing the drugs”, the note added.

“It was found to have been a fire set with the intention of seizing the 42 kilos of cocaine because of its high value on the drug trafficking market”, the document said.
