Africa-Press – Mozambique. The government on Thursday approved new national minimum wages by sector of activity, to come into force in both the civil service and in the private sector from August 1st.
In the civil service, the minimum wage increased by around 5%, setting the new base at 4,691 meticais against the 4,468 meticais current since 2019.
Minister of Labour and Social Security Margarida Talapa announced that the agriculture, livestock and hunting sector would see an increase of 10%, and the industrial and semi-industrial maritime fishing sector 3.7%.
The manufacturing industry saw an increase of 6.43% and banking and insurance 5.9%.
Minister Talapa revealed the figures at the end of the 29th ordinary session of the Council of Ministers on Thursday.
The minister explained that the impact of Covid-19, natural disasters, terrorism in Cabo Delgado and the armed attacks in the centre of the country were taken into consideration when approving the new minimum wages.
“Mineral extraction industry (Sector III – Large companies) rose from 9,254.60 to 9,846.89 meticais, corresponding to 6.4%; Sector V – Production and distribution of electricity, gas and water, increased from 8,300 meticais to 8,900, corresponding to 7.2%. In sector VI – Construction, the minimum wage rose to 6,331.40 meticais from the previous 6,136.70 meticais corresponding to 3.1%,” Minister Talapa detailed.
