Africa-Press – Mozambique. Maputo municipality does not have the money to pay companies providing solid waste collection services, but says it is mobilising additional financial resources to pay them to improve services.

A Maputo City Council press release acknowledges that garbage collection activities have been interrupted in some areas of the city due to debts, adding that “efforts” are being made to mobilise money to fund resumption of the service.

Aware of the problems that the lack of timely payment causes to companies contracted for the service, Maputo Municipal Council says it is following a financial management plan that prioritises monthly instalment payments to these companies, sometimes even sacrificing other equally important Maputo City Council.

Despite the effort, the gap between the payments made and the accumulated debt has been growing continuously, generating an environment of tension between the municipality and the managers of the contracted companies.

This situation worsens particularly whenever the festive season approaches, leading to frequent threats of service interruptions.
