Victims of landslide in Moatize call for support to rebuild their houses

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The victims of landslides, during rock-cutting operations at the Moatize mine, in the central Mozambican province of Tete, claim that they are not receiving support from the authorities in order to rebuild their houses that were damaged.

On 5 January, rocks dislodged during mining caused damage to the communities surrounding the operations, leaving dozens of houses and other properties partially destroyed.

According to the authorities, the number of houses affected now stands at 21.

According to the victims, cited in Tuesday’s issue of the independent daily “O País”, the authorities are doing nothing to repair the affected houses. The victims say “they are tired and are asking for speed in rebuilding their homes.”

For its part, the Moatize district government says that the case has been handed over to the Moatize municipality, and investigations are being carried out at the scene of the incident, which should be concluded later this week.
