Maputo River reaches alert levels in Matutuíne

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Flow in the Maputo River in Matutuíne district, Maputo province, has reached alert levels as a result of increasing runoff from upstream countries.

Although significant impacts have yet to be felt, there is already some flooding of farming areas in the Fronteira Oeste [Western Border] station in the river basin.

The situation was announced on Tuesday during the Maputo provincial government’s first ordinary session, which assessed the situation regarding the current rainy and cyclonic season.

Session spokesperson Ludjero Gemo told the press that the executive was concerned about possible impacts from increasing flow in the region’s main river basins, and, in close coordination with ARA-SUL, would implement a survey of reservoirs so as to potentially avoid flooding.

Flow in the Umbelúzi and Incomáti river basins meanwhile remains below alert levels, despite the increase in discharges in upstream countries.
