Since October, a total of 257 conventional, mixed-type and precarious classrooms in Nampula province were destroyed by uncontrolled fires and strong winds, the latter accompanying the heavy rain falling over the last few days, Wamphula Fax reports. The situation affects 18,309 students and 174 teachers.
According to the contact for emergency activities in the Provincial Directorate of Education, João João, the districts principally affected are Malema, Muecate, Mogovolas, Nacala-à-Velha, Eráti, Rapale, Memba, Mecubúri, Meconta, Nacala, Ribàué, Nacarôa and Murrupula.
João gave his report last week at the Emergency Operational Centre (CNOE) meeting on the 2023/2024 rainy and cyclonic season, attended by provincial Secretary of State, Jaime Neto.
The education sector has been criticised by authorities for allegedly not sharing information about the destruction of precarious school infrastructure.
According to authorities, these constructions should be a part of statistics, because they are used in the teaching and learning process.
It was announced that, in mitigation, Nampula province received guarantees from partners regarding the availability of tents and educational material.
