Africa-Press – Mozambique. The elephant which killed a 61-year-old man in the village of Mavoze, Massingir district, Gaza, on Saturday (03-02) was shot on Monday by a team of rangers from the Limpopo National Park, Radio Mozambique reports.
Elephant attacks have already claimed three lives in the region this year, so the shooting is seen is seen as part of ongoing efforts to contain the wave of deaths of people attacked by elephants in Massingir district, in the north of Gaza province, the state broadcaster reports.
Limpopo National Park inspection coordinator Romão Gadaga told Radio Mozambique that the park, in addition to culling the pachyderm, had offered multifaceted support to the family of the deceased, including for the holding of funeral ceremonies.
“The Park is sorry for the death of the Mavoze community member, and put together a team rangers who were sent to the area where the incident occurred in order to locate the animal and kill it. The team managed to achieve their goal on Monday afternoon,” Gadaga said.
Malaquias Cuamba, the head of Mavoze administrative post, said that the killing of the elephant would bring some relief to families who had lost loved ones, and the population in general, as they would be able to continue their routine activities with a clear mind.
“One of the requests that the community and family made was to kill the problem animal, so that it would not tomorrow put other residents of the village in a similar situation,” Cuamba said. “This way, they are psychologically a little relieved, because the animal will now not cause any further casualties in the community. Another one may appear, but that one is gone.”
