Africa-Press – Mozambique. The government has just declared a three-day national mourning for the death of 98 people in the sinking of a vessel in Lunga, on Ilha de Moçambique, in the province of Nampula.
According to the government spokesperson, Filimão Suaze, the mourning will be observed from zero hours on April 10 until 23:59 on Friday (12), during which time the national flag and the presidential pavilion will be flown at half-mast across the entire national territory and in the diplomatic and consular missions of the Republic of Mozambique.
At a press conference, Suaze explained that the government has established an inquiry commission to investigate the causes of the accident and make recommendations.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, who leads a government team in Lunga, admitted there were shortcomings in passenger transport control, as the boat is for fishing purposes.
Another aspect he mentioned is that the boat started its journey from the fishing port rather than the usual passenger boarding point, where the maritime administration inspector checks the capacity and conditions of the vessel before allowing it to set sail.
In the accident, 29 people survived, while three others remain missing.
