Maputo city: 10 blocks have disappeared in Magoanine “A” due to flooding

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The rains that have fallen in the city of Maputo over the last two years have led to the disappearance of around 10 of the 15 blocks in the Magoanine “A” neighbourhood.

As a result of the floods, more than 300 families have lost their possessions and have found refuge in accommodation centers. In the neighbourhood alone, there are more than 2,000 families at risk.

Residents heard by the municipality say that they still dream of returning to their homes, but since 2021 they have only been satisfied with promises of better days.

“As time goes by, the area is getting smaller and smaller. If it rains again, the whole street will be shrunk, there will be nothing left,” said Chimene Matusse, a resident quoted by the STVat an audience with the Mayor.

The residents of the five blocks on the verge of collapse say they are fed up with the city council’s promises and are looking for urgent solutions.

“This problem that nobody sees because it’s here in the interior of the neighbourhood could grow and get here where we are,” said another resident.

Speaking to the inhabitants, Rasaque Manhique said he was working to find solutions such as resettlement for the families in the most unfortunate situations, as well as the creation of water crossings.

“From now on we’re going to work. We have to understand, with a lot of pain, that our population has needs,” he said, agreeing that relocating people to new neighbourhoods “doesn’t solve the problem”.
