Renamo has been led since January 17, 2019 by Ossufo Momade, 63 years old, elected after the death of the party’s historic leader, Afonso Dhlakama (1953-2018).

The Congress, which is still ongoing this Friday morning, was marked by the exclusion of the candidacy for leadership of Venâncio Mondlane, deputy and party candidate in the October 2023 municipal elections for the municipality of Maputo, for not meeting the profile requirements defined by the party bodies.

Mondlane still turned to the courts to force the inclusion of his candidacy, but, despite a precautionary measure that was accepted by the court, congress did not change the list of candidates submitted to the vote nor allowed him to enter the main meeting.

Mozambique will hold general elections on October 9, which include, in addition to legislative and provincial elections, presidential elections, in which the current president, Filipe Nyusi, can no longer compete, as he has reached the constitutional limit of two terms.

After the election of the president, Renamo will have to clarify which candidate it will support for the position of President of the Republic in the October elections, who, as a rule, is the party leader.
