Increase in repatriation of illegal migrants

AfricaPress-mozambique: One hundred foreigners, mostly Malawians, Chinese and Burundians, were recently repatriated for illegal immigration, lack of residence permit, failure to communication a change of address and/or accommodation.

The number of deportations represents an increase of more than 300% over the same period last year, when 29 cases were registered.

The repatriations took place as a result of tipoffs and National Migration Service (SENAMI) inspections.

SENAMI spokesman Celestino Matsinhe told journalists on Thursday (June 10) that 151 foreigners with irregular migratory status were detected in the city of Maputo and the provinces of Tete, Sofala and Niassa in one week.

“Of those questioned, 100 were repatriated, 46 are awaiting repatriation and five have regularized their immigration status,” he said, calling again for citizens to report suspected illegal immigrants.
