Mozambique: Government approves revision of electricity law

Africa-PressMozambique. The cabinet meeting of Mozambique on Tuesday approved the revision of the electricity law to adapt it to new challenges, aiming to open space for the adoption of all types of energy sources to achieve universal access in the country.

“The revision aims to adapt the law to the dynamics and challenges of universal access to quality and reliable energy using all energy sources,” said the Mozambican government spokesman, Filimão Suaze.

He was speaking to the media moments after the 33rd ordinary session of the cabinet meeting at the Presidency in Maputo.

According to the Mozambican government spokesman, the review of the law, which is due to be submitted to the Mozambican parliament in the next few days, will prioritise the use of renewable energy sources.

“The law applies to the production, storage, transport, distribution and sale of electricity in the country, as well as its export and import,” Filimão Suaze said.

The Mozambican government aims to achieve two million new connections by 2024, benefiting more than 10 million people, (30 million inhabitants) with energy at home raising from 34% to 64% of the population
