Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican Football Federation (FMF) has dismissed Portuguese coach Horácio Gonçalves from his post as national manager, a source from the organisation said on Monday.
The move was said to be justified by poor results and complaints from players about their relationship with the coach. In his 12 games in charge in the six months since he took over in April, the team has had three wins, four draws and five defeats.
His departure comes after the team’s setbacks in qualifying for next year’s World Cup finals, with Mozambique bottom of their group and so out of the competition, with two games still to play. Mozambique have had one draw against Ivory Coast and three defeats against Malawi and Cameroon (twice).
Gonçalves, 58, arrived in Mozambique in 2018, first as coach of Costa do Sol, helping them become Moçambola league champions for the first time in 12 years. He also won four other titles with that club, including two Super Cups, a Mozambique Cup and the Opening Tournament of the city of Maputo.
When he arrived as national team manager, he replaced his compatriot Luís Gonçalves, who was dismissed in March after Mozambique had failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations (CAN).
