Africa-Press – Mozambique. VIitano Singano, president of the Democratic Revolution (RD) party, remains detained in the Maputo Civil Prison, where he was taken more than five months ago, accused of conspiracy against state security, RD secretary-general Nunes Paulo has said.
Nunes Paulo told ‘Notícias’ said that the RD party’s insistent efforts in contact with the justice authorities to obtain details about the crime of which Singano is accused and/or to make his trial more flexible have not been successful.
“All we know is that they say that our president’s situation is very serious. We feel that the authorities intend to prolong this case. We have been waiting for a formal statement from the prosecution for a long time to understand all the details of the case and to know when it will or will not go to court,” he stressed.
He stated that Vitano Singano is still barred from receiving visitors in prison, having been last seen by his peers just before his arrest in November of last year.
“After he was arrested, we never saw or spoke to him again. We have no idea of his health status, nor are there any developments regarding the case. Whenever we try to visit him, we are informed that access to our party president is still limited,” he said.
Nuno Paulo also said that even the party’s lawyer has not been able to obtain any major updates on the situation. However, he assured that efforts are continuing to be made to get Singano out of prison.
The RD secretary-general added that, due to the incarceration of the party president, matters relating to the Political Commitment for Inclusive National Dialogue, of which the party is a signatory, are being processed under the leadership of the organization’s vice-president, without any guidance from Vitano Singano.
Singano was arrested in the capital on November 8 last year and taken to the 8th Precinct Police Station, in response to an arrest warrant issued by the Maputo City Judicial Court.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office accuses Vitano Singano of having planned an assault on the Ponta Vermelha, the official residence of the President of the Republic, last November, in the context of the post-election demonstrations that ravaged the country.
The president of the Democratic Revolution party is also accused of having attempted to recruit members of the Defence and Security Forces and former guerrillas of a national political force, among other people with military experience, to assault police and military units with a view to violently altering the democratic rule of law and creating political and social disorder and subverting the state.
