Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Swedish ambassador to Mozambique, Mette Sunnergren, announced on Wednesday that her country has invested over two million Swedish kronor (about 200 million dollars, at the current exchange rate) in electricity projects.
According to Sunnergren, who was speaking in Maputo at the Business Conference on Renewable Electricity (RENMOZ 2025), the amount was particularly invested in the rehabilitation of the Mavuzi and Chicamba Hydroelectric Power Stations in the central province of Manica, as well as in the construction of a national control centre.
“This cooperation has provided more than a million Mozambicans with access to renewable and sustainable electricity, significantly improving their quality of life and boosting the economy”, she said.
She also said that Sweden is committed to supporting Mozambique’s Energy Transition Strategy to “guarantee access to reliable and sustainable energy for all”, establishing the country as a regional clean energy hub.
The diplomat believes that Swedish cooperation in the energy sector “is a shining example of what can be achieved when nations work together.”
The European Union ambassador, Antonino Maggiore, regarded the conference as an important act in the context of the partnership with the EU and its member states.
He said that at a meeting held in the President’s Office on 9 April “the message was to reiterate that the Mozambican government, Mozambican institutions and private businesses, can rely on the concrete support of the EU and its member states in carrying out the reforms necessary to strengthen the development of Mozambique to the benefit of its people, and the interests of Europe and European businesses, with mutual gains”.
Maggiore stressed that the EU intends to contribute to achieving the economic independence of Mozambique, in line with the agenda of the Mozambican government.
For his part, the chairperson of the Lusophone Renewable Energies Association, Meira Pereira, said that Mozambique has taken a courageous step in the energy transition.
“For us, the energy transition is an opportunity for repositioning, a way of proving that Africa has its own proposals, concrete solutions and possible paths”, he said, claiming that this vision places Mozambique in line with the most innovative African and global climate agendas.
