Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane on Thursday met in Maputo with the Portuguese Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Nuno Sampaio, in “the context of creation of mechanisms for dialogue and reforms in Mozambique.”
According to a statement made public in his Facebook account, Mondlane says that “the meeting, requested by the Portuguese minister himself, took place as part of his visit to our country and reflected a clear message which means that Portugal believes in the new cycle that is starting in Mozambique.”
“I had the honour of being received in an audience by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Nuno Sampaio, in a meeting of high political and diplomatic significance for the future of Mozambique”, reads the message.
The meeting was also aimed at exchanging views on the political situation in Mozambique, after the mass demonstrations called by Mondlane in order to protest against the allegedly fraudulent results of the elections held last October.
During the protests, which degenerated into rioting, over 350 people were shot dead by police, according to data from the NGO “Decide” Electoral Platform. The protests were also characterized by looting and the destruction of businesses and public infrastructure.
“During our frank and productive conversation, the Secretary of State welcomed the political dialogue that I had started with Daniel Chapo, stressing that understanding and political consultation are fundamental to consolidating our young democracy and boosting the economic and social development that our people so desperately want”, says Mondlane’s message.
During the meeting, the two men also addressed “relevant issues related to the process of creating the ANAMALALA Party and the concrete steps we have taken to strengthen a new national hope, based on principles of freedom, justice and inclusive development.”

Last week, Mondlane met the European Union ambassador to Mozambique, Antonino Maggiore, “to discuss the country’s political situation.” These meetings took place shortly after the country’s parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, transformed into law, the “Political Commitment for an Inclusive National Dialogue”, a document signed on 5 March by President Daniel Chapo and nine political parties.
This document supposedly opens the way for wide-ranging reforms including constitutional amendments and changes to the electoral legislation. Also to be discussed in the dialogue are such matters as tax reforms, the system of justice and modernisation of the public administration.
Anamalala, the name for Mondlane’s new political party, is an acronym meaning “National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique”. It is also an expression in the Makua language meaning “it has finished”, or “it is going to finish”. The “it” in question is the system of governance headed by the ruling Frelimo Party.
