Africa-Press – Mozambique. The President of Zanzibar, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has affirmed that Zanzibar will continue to strengthen economic and diplomatic cooperation with the Republic of Mozambique for the mutual benefit of both nations.

Dr. Mwinyi made the statement on May 9, 2025, during official talks with the President of Mozambique, His Excellency Daniel Francisco Chapo, who is in the country for a special visit. The meeting took place at the State House in Zanzibar.

During the discussions, President Mwinyi noted that President Chapo’s decision to choose Tanzania—including Zanzibar—as his first foreign visit after being elected, demonstrates his deep appreciation for the longstanding relationship between the two countries, a bond that was founded by the nations’ founding leaders.

President Mwinyi identified five key areas of economic cooperation between Zanzibar and Mozambique: the Blue Economy, Oil and Gas, Deep sea fishing, tourism and investiment.

He highlighted Mozambique’s more than 20 years of experience in the oil and gas sector as a valuable opportunity for Zanzibar to learn and benefit from, especially in expanding its own economy. Likewise, he emphasized Zanzibar’s achievements in developing the Blue Economy as a model from which Mozambique could also draw lessons to strengthen its own efforts in that sector.

On the topic of language, Dr. Mwinyi pointed out that the swahili language presents another important area of cooperation. He proposed a teacher exchange program Zanzibar would provide Swahili language instructors while Mozambique would send Portuguese language teachers. This initiative would not only enhance language learning but also boost tourism and foster stronger communication between the people of both countries.

Furthermore, President Mwinyi assured the Government of Mozambique that Zanzibar will continue to support Mozambican descendants living on the islands, who currently number around 3,000. He added that some have already been granted Tanzanian citizenship.

In his remarks, President Daniel Francisco Chapo expressed Mozambique’s strong commitment to enhancing its partnership with Zanzibar, stating that his visit aimed to fulfill that mission. He said the visit marks the beginning of new economic opportunities and the further strengthening of long-standing diplomatic ties between the two countries.
