Africa-Press – Mozambique. Malawi’ President Lazarus Chakwera and Mozambique President Daniel Francis Chapo on Friday, June 6, 2025 jointly commissioned the state of the art Dedza-Calomue One-Go Border Post.

The Dedza-Calomue One-Go Border Post, is a significant development for trade and travel between the peoples of Malawi and Mozambique.

President Lazarus Chakwera has said that the commissioning of Dedza One Go Border Post signifies governments efforts in promoting trade and regional connectivity to enhance infrastructural and economic development for Malawi and the Republic of Mozambique.

Speaking during the commissioning of Dedza One Go Border Post along with his Mozambique counterpart in Dedza district, Chakwera said that the inaguration of the Border Post will among others assist in unlocking economic opportunities and promote regional connectivity.

In his remarks President of the Republic of Mozambique Daniel Francisco Chapo reaffirmed his administrations commitment to facilitate trade activities to speed up economies for both nations.

President Chapo further called for Unity among the two nations, emphasising that Malawi and Mozambique are one people.

Malawi’s Minister of Trade Vitumbiko Mumba commended the development of the project, describing it as a bridge for economic development for Mozambique and Malawi.

The Minister also said the facility will among others assist in improving efficiency and eliminate border delays.

Minister Mumba further hailed the world Bank and other development partners for implementing the project.

It streamlines border crossing procedures by consolidating various agencies’ checks into one location, reducing delays and costs for cross-border traders and travelers.

This initiative aims to facilitate trade, promote economic growth, and enhance revenue collection for both countries.

Upon their arrival, the two leaders were first briefed about the facility before proceeding to unveil the plaque and cutting the ribbon, signifying the official opening of the post.

Both leaders were welcomed on arrival by several top Malawi and Mozambique officials that included Mozambique Ambassador to Malawi Alexander Manjati, Malawi Ambassador to Mozambique Wezzie Moyo, Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC) Colleen Zamba, Speaker of National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara, Minister of Trade and Industry Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba, and Minister of Economy from the Republic of Mozambique Basilio Zefanias Muhate, among others.

After the facility launch, both leaders are to address the press at Kamuzu Palace before Chapo leaves for Mozambique.

The Dedza/Calomuė One-Stop Border Post is a landmark development in cross-border cooperation and trade facilitation. It boasts two examination bays for goods, parking spots for 100 freight trucks, and a modern passenger terminal.

Before the construction of the new One-Stop Border Post facility, it took about 24 to 36 hours to clear a truck carrying items such as wheat, fertilisers, groceries, and raw materials for Malawi’s manufacturing industry.

Drivers and clearing agents had to dash from one office to another between the two countries to clear the goods.

Similarly, Malawian traders traveling to and from South Africa through the Dedza–Mozambique border had difficulty locating the appropriate offices to present the required paperwork.

In addition, the lack of parking facilities meant that the road leading to the border post was always congested, as trucks scrambled for space to park while waiting to be cleared.
