Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Matola Provincial Hospital Maternity Unit and Nursery will be temporarily closed for four months from 16 June to allow for the execution of works to improve the facilities and for the reorganization of services.

According to an official statement, the closure aims to ensure safer, more humane and efficient care for pregnant women and newborns who use the Matola Provincial Hospital, in line with the government’s commitment to continuous improvement in the quality of health care.

During the closure period, users will be able to go to alternative health units, such as the Matola 1 and 2 health centres, Matola Gare, Machava, São Dâmaso Health Centre, Muhalaze, Boquisso, Khongolote, Malhampsene and Ndlavela Health Centre.

The maternity ward at Matola Provincial Hospital has been the subject of allegations of baby theft and mistreatment of pregnant women, which led the Minister of Health to create a commission of inquiry into the cases in March of this year.
