Africa-Press – Mozambique. Emergency works are planned to restore traffic over the Monapo River, linking Nampula and Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique, by July, after the bridge was damaged in March during Cyclone Jude.
This is a repair project for the crossing in the village of Namialo, which was suspended last week, along with three others, after the Ministry of Finance decided that opinions from the Functional Unit for the Supervision of Acquisitions were needed on the process.
However, the situation has since been resolved and work in the district of Meconta, in the province of Nampula, began last Monday, said the provincial delegate of the National Road Administration, Mateus Espírito Santo, on Wednesday.
“The contract had been suspended, but the suspension has now been lifted. The works have resumed and, as they progress, we believe that by next month we will have restored traffic,” he assured.
The works in question are emergency repairs to the crossing linking the provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado, currently provided by an alternative detour opened at that location to facilitate the movement of people and goods.
On the other hand, the road sector in Nampula acknowledged facing challenges in restoring traffic on several roads destroyed or affected during the passage of Cyclone Jude on March 10, particularly between the districts of Ribaué and Lalaua, and Moma and Larde, with no deadline yet.
“We are currently working on the two bridges that were washed away, because these infrastructures are vital to be restored. Fortunately, the water level has dropped slightly, so what we have to do now is find alternatives, but I cannot give any timeframe. However, efforts are being made to restore traffic as quickly as possible,” said Mateus Espírito Santo.
Even so, according to the official, overall, in the province of Nampula, traffic on the roads disrupted by the bad weather has been restored: “The rest of the roads that were affected are passable, although some with restricted traffic, but we can say that apart from these two points [Ribaué and Lalaua, Moma and Larde], traffic is back to normal in the province of Nampula.”
The last rainy season, from October to April, including the passage of Cyclone Jude, affected 1,023 roads in Nampula province, damaging seven bridges and 23 aqueducts, among other damage.
