Africa-Press – Mozambique. The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, received, this Friday, in an audience at his Work Office, the Deputy Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, Tim Enderlin, who reaffirmed his country’s commitment to promoting peace, sustainable development and the consolidation of cooperation with Mozambique, especially at a time when the country is celebrating 50 years of independence.

Speaking to the press at the end of the meeting, Tim Enderlin highlighted the solidity of bilateral relations, based on a long history of partnership and mutual support. “There is a long historical relationship between Switzerland and Mozambique, and my visit is within this context,” said the Swiss leader, who is in Maputo as part of the deepening of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

According to Enderlin, Mozambique is one of the priority countries for Swiss cooperation, with one of the most significant programs in Africa.

“Mozambique is one of the countries that has had one of the most important cooperation programs for many years, and it is also a country where Switzerland has traditionally engaged in peace and dialogue,” he stressed.

During the meeting, the two leaders revisited key moments in cooperation between the two countries, with particular emphasis on Swiss involvement in the national peace process.

“You may remember the historic peace agreement of 2019, in which Switzerland had the privilege of supporting the process,” said Tim Enderlin.

The Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement, signed in Maputo on 6 August, 2019, put an end to recurring cycles of military instability by ensuring the definitive cessation of hostilities between the Mozambican government and Renamo.

The agreement made possible the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of 5,221 former guerrillas, as well as the implementation of a new decentralization model.

The meeting also took place against the backdrop of the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of national independence, with the Swiss diplomat issuing a message of congratulations to the Mozambican people. “I think you can look back with pride on the 50 years of independence, and even more proudly look forward to the next 50 years,” Tim Enderlin said.
