Africa-Press – Mozambique. On the sidelines of the 66th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), held in Geneva, Mozambique’s Minister of Economy, Basílio Muhate, made an official visit to the facilities of Philip Morris International (PMI) in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Wednesday, July 9.

The purpose of the visit was to deepen institutional knowledge of PMI’s global and national operations and explore opportunities for cooperation with Mozambique, within the framework of promoting sustainable investments and generating skilled jobs.

During the meeting, PMI presented an overview of the company, highlighting its position as one of the largest multinational companies in the consumer goods sector, present in over 180 markets. Information was also shared about operations in Mozambique, focusing on investments made, jobs created, and social and environmental responsibility initiatives.

The visit’s agenda included presentations on global and regional sustainability initiatives, including environmental impact reduction projects and community programs; a technical demonstration of new-generation products (heated tobacco), with scientific and regulatory frameworks; and the sharing of experiences within the framework of the T5 – African Coalition of Tobacco Producing Countries, whose member states are Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania.

During the meeting, Minister Muhate emphasized that the Government of Mozambique prioritizes inclusive economic transformation, highlighting the importance of promoting local content and the involvement of Mozambican companies in the supply chain; increasing the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises and young entrepreneurs in the productive sector; promoting technical training programs, internships, and knowledge transfer, aligned with the PMI’s core business; and leveraging digital transformation as a strategic vector for developing national capabilities.

On the occasion, the Minister of Economy extended an official invitation to PMI to attend the 60th FACIM, to be held from August 25 to 31, 2025, in Marracuene, Mozambique’s largest multi-sectoral platform for economic and business promotion.

The visit allowed for strengthening bilateral dialogue and identifying priority areas for future collaboration, with emphasis on the preparation of training programs for young Mozambicans, digitalization initiatives, and PMI’s active participation in FACIM 2025.
