AU Biannual Summit Begins in Malabo

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The 7TH biannual coordination summit of the African Union (AU) began on Sunday morning in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

A coordination meeting between the AU and the regional economic communities (RECs) and regional mechanisms (RMs), the summit was preceded by the 47th ordinary session of the AU Executive Council, held on July 10-11 and chaired by Angolan Foreign Minister Téte António.

According to the meeting’s program, President João Lourenço will speak at the beginning and end of the event, during which several reports will be presented, such as the “State of Continental Integration” report by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment, Moses Vilakati.

The presentation of the document “State of Regional Integration by the RECs and MR” will be given by the President of the Presidential Council of the State of Libya and President of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), Mohamed al-Menfi.

Other reports will be presented by Mahamat Itno Déby, President of the Republic of Chad and President of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CENSAD), and by Ismail Omar Guelleh, President of Djibouti and of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

Address are also expected from Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone and acting head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), as well as William Samoei Ruto, Kenyan head of state and acting president of the East African Community (EAC).

The President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnagagwa, will speak on behalf of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and his Burundian counterpart, Évariste Ndayishimiye, on behalf of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

The host, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea and head of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), will also speak on the subject.

Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of Egypt and of the North African Regional Capacity (NARC), and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia and of the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF), will speak on regional mechanisms.

The Egyptian statesman will also present the report “The Role of AUDA-NEPAD in Achieving Continental and Regional Integration” in his capacity as Chair of the Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee (HSGOC) and the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD).
