Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican Zacarias Lucas Nguenha is the winner of the 7th edition of the Fernando Leite Couto Literary Award, with his work “Costurar a Linguagem”, the jury announced in Maputo on Thursday.
“‘Costurar a Linguagem’ appealingly combines the universal elements that are gaining a new dimension in poetic language, explored as constructed living matter, creating a poetry that is both physical and abstract. It is a work with rhythms and meaning that reveals technical mastery and a high degree of maturity in writing,” explained the jury, through its president, Matteo Angius.
The award for Zacarias Lucas Lázaro Nguenha, a native of Manica province, central Mozambique, includes a sum of 150,000 meticais (€2,027) and the editing and publication of “Costurar a Linguagem” in Mozambique, by the FFLC publishing house, and in Portugal.
The award also includes Zacarias Lucas Lázaro’s participation in various literary events in Portugal, most notably the book’s presentation at the Óbidos International Literary Festival.
In addition to Matteo Angius, the jury included poet Álvaro Taruma and professor and poet Lica Sebastião.
Zacarias Lucas Lázaro Nguenha was born on February 20, 1994, in Munhinga, Sussundenga district, Manica province. He is a Portuguese language teacher, a graduate of the Catholic University of Mozambique, and is currently studying Law at the University of Púnguè. He made his debut as an author in 2024 with the book “Confessions of the Dawn,” according to information released by the FFLC.
The Fernando Leite Couto Literary Award “honors new authors” and aims to “stimulate the production” of new literary works by emerging Mozambican authors writing in Portuguese.
