Africa-Press – Mozambique. Dozens of unattended goats, oxen and donkeys roam the city of Tete’s main streets daily, disrupting the normal flow of traffic.
It is common to see these animals searching for browsing in the early hours and late afternoons. The animals’ favourite neighbourhoods are Samora Machel, Filipe Samuel Magaia, Mateus Sansão Muthemba and Josina Machel.
It’s also common to see animal-drawn vehicles used to transporting sand on the city’s main streets and avenues.
Tete Mayor César de Carvalho says he’s aware of the problem and clarifies that urban regulations prohibit the circulation of animals in public spaces.
Meanwhile, any movement of animals on public roads, whether in herds or in small numbers, must comply with the rules. Furthermore, the animals must at all times be accompanied by shepherds to be able to circulate in the areas where they are allowed to circulate..
De Carvalho has laid down a seven-day deadline for the owners of these roaming animals to take care of them, in default of which the animals [found in the streets] will be considered ‘stray’ and seized for slaughter and distribution.
César de Carvalho was speaking during a working visit to the Matundo neighbourhood to publicize the municipal development plan.
