Moza Banco reports H1 loss of US$2.3 million

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Moza Banco, one of the country’s five largest Mozambican banks, ended the first half of 2025 with losses of 149.6 million meticais (US$2.3 million), reversing the profit trend recorded in the same period of the previous year.

According to the interim financial report, the institution had reported, in the first half of 2024, net income of 11.3 million meticais (US$179,000).

Before taxes, performance in the first six months of this year was positive, with profits of 80 million meticais (US$1.2 million). However, the payment of 230.5 million meticais (US$3.6 million) in Corporate Income Tax for the first half of the year pushed the net result into negative territory.

Moza Banco’s total assets reached 64.9 billion meticais (US$1.03 billion) on June 30, reflecting a slight decline in customer loans, which stood at 19.2 billion meticais (US$305 million).

Liabilities fell to 55.4 billion meticais (US$880 million), of which 49.3 billion meticais (US$783 million) were in deposits, representing a 3% increase compared to December 2024.

In 2016, following serious financial difficulties, the bank came under the control of Kuhanha, the management company of the pension fund for the Bank of Mozambique employees, after the Portuguese bank Novo Banco – the successor to Banco Espírito Santo – withdrew as majority shareholder.

Currently, Moza Banco’s shareholder structure is led by Kuhanha, with 66% of the capital, followed by Arise B.V., with 30.7%. Moza had already closed 2024 with losses of 103.8 million meticais (US$1.6 million), after two consecutive years of profits.

In 2023, Moza Banco made a profit of 108.8 million meticais (US$1.7 million) and, in 2022, 90.1 million meticais (US$1.43 million), thus reversing the losses accumulated since 2016, which had reached 1.4 billion meticais (US$21.9 million) in 2021. At the end of 2023, the bank operated with 63 business units throughout the country and a total of 943 employees.
