Africa-Press – Mozambique. At least 95 per cent of interprovincial passenger transporters in Mozambique operate without proper documents, including the public service driver’s license.
According to the head of the Traffic Police (PT), Cassamo Ali, who was speaking to reporters during a joint inspection operation with the National Road Transport Institute (INATRO), most drivers lack adequate passenger transport licenses, “while others operate with documents that are out of date.”
The inspection operation follows the two fatal accidents that killed 36 people in the southern provinces of Maputo and Gaza on Monday, “reinforcing the urgency for stricter measures in the sector.”
“We found that those operating in passenger transport do not have valid licenses”, said Ali. “Furthermore, all the vehicles we sent for inspection were not in a fit condition to carry passengers”.
Among other irregularities identified are the lack of compatible licenses, the absence of a passenger list, and lack of insurance.
For his turn, Nelson Nunes, NATRO chairperson, called on the country’s municipal authorities to take greater responsibility for licensing, after receiving complaints from transport associations.
“While members are committed to using the terminals, local authorities, specifically municipalities, do not monitor this type of activity, making it difficult to monitor parallel terminals”, Nunes said.
