Africa-Press – Mozambique. Troops from member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have claimed the destruction in late October of three terrorist bases in Macomia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
A statement from the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) said the SADC troops on 24 October began a military operation in Macomia which culminated with the destruction of the three bases, located north of Lake Nguri and the Muera river.
The SAMIM troops also rescued eight women and five children who were being held by the terrorists, and are now in the care of the Mozambican authorities.
They seized an unspecified amount of weaponry, including RPG-7 rocket launchers, 60 mm mortars, PKM machine guns and AK-47 assault rifles.
SAMIM spokesperson Major Nathalie Mfaladi said the multi-national force “continues to dominate and pursue insurgents in the area as they have now been dislodged from their main bases south of the Messalo River and are fleeing north of the river where there are other suspected bases”.
“SAMIM forces support the government of Mozambique, with the Rwanda Security Forces, to create conditions necessary for a return to normal life in Cabo Delgado.”
This statement sought to which reassure Mozambicans of “a collective commitment to a peaceful, stable and secure Cabo Delgado and Mozambique”.
