Africa-Press – Mozambique. After seven consecutive days in which the Mozambican health authorities did not report any deaths from the Covid-19 respiratory disease, the disease killed two people on Sunday.

The latest victims were a Mozambican man aged 36 and a Mozambican woman aged 59. Both died in Maputo city. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 1,936.

According to a Sunday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 958,495 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 552 of them in the previous 24 hours.

547 of the tests yielded negative results, while five people tested positive for the coronavirus. Four of the new cases were women and one was a man. Four were from Maputo city, and one was from Nampula.

The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) on Sunday was 0.9 per cent. Over the previous few days, the positivity rate was 0.5 per cent on Saturday, 0.3 per cent on Friday, 1.8 per cent on Thursday and 0.5 per cent on Wednesday.

Over the same 24 hour period, two Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (one in Maputo and one in Manica), and one new patient was admitted (in Maputo). The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment facilities fell from 11 on Saturday to eight on Sunday. Five of these patients were in Maputo, with one each in Matola, Inhambane and Zambezia.

The Ministry release added that 13 people had made a complete recovery from Covid-19 on Sunday, all of them in the northern province of Cabo Delgado. The total number of recoveries now stands at 149,368, or 98.6 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.

The number of active Covid-19 cases fell from 129 on Saturday to 119 on Sunday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 40 (33.6 per cent of the total); Cabo Delgado, 23; Nampula, 12; Gaza, 10; Niassa, eight; Inhambane, six; Zambezia, five; Manica, five; Tete, five; Sofala, five; and Maputo province, two.

The Ministry also reported that 90,924 people were vaccinated against Covid-19 in the previous 24 hours. 2,698,589 people have now been fully vaccinated, while 5,574,877 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
