Africa-Press – Mozambique. The French oil and gas company, Total Energies, which heads the Mozambique LNG Project, located in Palma district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, on Monday handed over a 1.7 kilometre road budgeted at 2.6 million US dollars.
The LNG project, which is budgeted at about 20 billion dollars, was forced to halt operations in 2021 following a major terrorist attack against Palma town. However, now the company is preparing to resume the project, as the security conditions have improved.
The road, which connects Senga village to the Quitunda region, in Palma district, will benefit over 600 households covered by the natural gas megaproject on the Afungi peninsula.
According to Total Energies general manager, Maxime Rabilloud, speaking during the inauguration of the road, his company invests about 20 million US dollars annually in socio-economic projects in the country, with a strong focus on Cabo Delgado.
Rabilloud believes that the new road will facilitate the transport of agricultural production and strengthen trade, “resolving constraints that, during the rainy season, used to isolate entire communities.”
In addition to the road, he said, the company will also fund the electrification of Senga village, in order to bring it up to the same standard as Quitunda, which already has access to the public electricity grid and basic social services provided by the project.
“Mozambique LNG’s commitment aims to improve the quality of life of local communities and create conditions for stability in a region still marked by challenges related to insecurity. These infrastructures are links to peace, greater well-being and more benefits for communities”, he said.
Rabilloud also said that, since 2021, Total Energies has been supporting initiatives in education, health, water supply and economic empowerment, “consolidating its presence as a strategic partner for the development of Cabo Delgado and Mozambique in general.”
Recently, Total Energies and the Northern Integrated Development Agency (ADIN) signed an agreement budgeted at 10 million dollars, aimed at boosting socio-economic development initiatives in Palma and the adjacent district of Mocímboa da Praia.
