Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Provincial Council of State Representation Services in Manica province will suspend all mining activity due to the high levels of mercury and cyanide contamination found in its rivers and reservoirs. A government commission will summon mining companies, starting on September 9th.
The decision was announced by Cláudia Carrau, spokesperson for the meeting to discuss the impact of mining in Manica province, who said: “It will be necessary to halt all mining activity in Manica province, because public health and environmental degradation are at stake.”
Carrau said that, starting Tuesday , September 9, a commission created by the government would meet nearly 30 mining companies, who will be encouraged to rehabilitate the soil. Only then will the effectiveness of the suspension measure, whose main concern lies in the Chicamba reservoir, be known.
“The waters are polluted and pose a risk to the lives of the population, so much so that it is currently dangerous to eat the fish that comes from the Chicamba reservoir,” she added.
The meeting to reflect on the impact of mining took place in the city of Chimoio, bringing together the Manica provincial government, mining sector operators and civil society organizations.
