Africa-Press – Mozambique. The state-owned company Revimo (Mozambique Road Network) is no longer operating three roads in the southern province of Gaza, the government spokesperson and Minister of State Administration, Inocêncio Impissa, announced on Tuesday.

He said Revimo’s contracts have been revoked for the roads between Bilene and Macia, Macia and Chokwe, and Chokwe and Macarretane.

Despite tollgates, Revimo had been making heavy losses on the three roads because the level of traffic using the roads was much lower than anticipated. Taken together, the three roads are 117.7 kilometres long.

“The low level of traffic, and hence of revenue, plus the high level of operational costs, contradict the initial projections”, said Impissa. The government has now authorised the Transport and Finance Ministries to set up a commission that will look into ways of managing the assets along the roads and ensure continued road maintenance.

Revimo was given the contract for the three roads in July 2021, without any public tender. The contract was supposed to last for 20 years.

Impissa, in his weekly briefing to the press, said the government had also received a report on road safety, showing an increase in the number of road accidents and of deaths on the roads.

Between January and August 2025, 430 traffic accidents were recorded, compared to 410 in the same period of 2024. The number of deaths increased from 504 to 575, a rise of 14 per cent.

“We are facing a serious road safety challenge”, said Impissa. “We have 30.1 deaths from traffic accidents per 100,000 inhabitants”.
