Moreira Chonguiça Honors Gito Baloi's Na Ku Randza

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican musician Moreira Chonguiça presents Na Ku Randza today, honouring the legendary Gito Baloi, as part of a broader tribute to Mozambique’s most influential artists. This is the second release in Chonguiça’s musical trilogy which pays tribute to Mozambique’s most influential artists in this landmark year of 50 years of independence.

Featuring rising Mozambican vocalist Pauleta Muholove, Na Ku Randza (which means “I Love You” in Changana) is a reinterpretation of Gito Baloi’s timeless classic. Baloi, one of Mozambique’s and Africa’s most beloved musical voices, was also the co-founder of the iconic South African world music trio Tananas.

This new version retains the soul of the original while infusing it with Chonguiça’s distinctive production sensibility and Muholove’s vocal and rhythmic artistry. The result is a cross-generational collaboration that blends legacy with innovation, celebrating the enduring richness of Mozambican culture.

The music video for Na Ku Randza was filmed at the historic Maputo Railway Station (CFM) — an iconic Mozambican landmark that recently celebrated its 130th anniversary. For decades, CFM’s locomotives transported Mozambican men to South Africa to work in the mines — a journey marked by sacrifice, longing, and resilience.

In this context, Na Ku Randza becomes more than a love song. It is a reflection on migration, enduring bonds, and the resilient heartbeat of Mozambican identity.

“Gito Baloi paved the way for many of us,” says Chonguiça. “Na Ku Randza is my way of honouring him — of keeping his music alive and accessible to new audiences, especially in a year when we reflect on the path we’ve taken as a nation and as artists.”

The single follows the success of “Dá Ou Não Dá” featuring Mr. Kuka, and continues Chonguiça’s trilogy — conceived and produced to spotlight the past, present, and future of Mozambican creativity on the global stage. All works are now available on digital platforms.

Moreira Chonguiça is a multifaceted artist — an ethnomusicologist, composer, producer, arranger, marketing strategist, content creator, jazz musician, cultural ambassador, and social entrepreneur — whose work consistently bridges culture, identity, and innovation.
