Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican Ministry of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries is organising Thursday and Friday the 2nd edition of the “Crescendo Azul” International Conference to promote an economy based on the oceans, in an event that will bring together around 1,500 people.
The event, under the slogan, “Investing in the Health of the Ocean is Investing in the Future of the Planet,” was addressed today by Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, and other speakers such as Kenya’s Head of State, Uhuru Kenyatta, and Ricardo Serrão Santos, Portugal’s Sea Minister, among others.
“This conference brings not only gains to the sea and fisheries sector, but above all to the tourism sector for our region,” said the governor of Inhambane province, Daniel Chapo, speaking to the media in Chibuene, Vilanculos district, the venue of the event.
The conference programme is made up of thematic debates with the participation of experts and government leaders from several countries.
Although with low levels of pollution, Mozambique, with a coastline of about 2,700 kilometres, is among the most vulnerable countries to climate change, facing cyclical flooding and tropical cyclones.
This context places the country among those most interested in halting global warming, rising oceans and the proliferation of extreme weather events, but the challenges are huge in the face of high poverty rates and the ambition to achieve an industrialised economy at a time when some fossil fuels remain among the main export products (such as coal and gas).
