Africa-Press – Mozambique. The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, has expressed his condolences to the Catholic Church following the death of Father Vicente Berenguer Lliopis, who passed away on October 21, 2025, in Teulada, Spain. In his message, the Head of State conveyed, on behalf of the people and Government of Mozambique and himself, his deep sorrow to His Holiness and the entire Catholic community, especially the Mozambican faithful, for the loss of this missionary.

Father Vicente Berenguer devoted a significant part of his life to serving the people of Mozambique. He began his mission in Mozambique in 1967 and continued until his retirement in 2023. Throughout his years of service, he was recognized for his courage and dedication to justice, notably for exposing the Wiriyamu Massacre that occurred in Tete on December 16, 1972, where more than 300 defenseless Mozambicans lost their lives.

During his long stay in Mozambique, Father Vicente made invaluable contributions to education. He actively supported the construction of school infrastructures and the education of disadvantaged children. He was driven by a strong belief that educating people is the most powerful tool for the development of the country.

His tireless work and commitment to the common good earned him numerous international honors and recognition. These accolades celebrated his dedication not only to education but also to justice and human rights in Mozambique.

The President’s message highlights the significant impact Father Vicente had on Mozambican society and expresses the nation’s gratitude for his unwavering service. His legacy continues to inspire the Catholic community and the people of Mozambique alike.
