Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Villa Algarve building, located in an up-market area of Maputo, is currently in ruins. But, according to Guilherme Ombe, National Director of History at the Ministry of Combatants, the government has decided to preserve its history and renovate it.

“We intend to carry out the restoration of that building, that imposing building, by redeveloping it into a museum-hotel. In other words, we aim to preserve the building’s history: the lower part, the façade. All elements that constitute its historical character will be retained. Then, on top, [we intend ] to build a hotel to ensure its sustainability,” Guilherme Ombe told Rádio Moçambique.

Guilerme Ombe added that the government was currently evaluating proposals for the rehabilitation of the infrastructure, and that there was no intention of selling the property.

The Vila Algarve was, during the colonial period, used to torture Mozambicans who had rebelled against Portuguese colonial rule.
