Africa-Press – Mozambique. The collapse of a pylon on a high voltage transmission line has left the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado without electricity.
According to the publicly owned electricity company, EDM, the pylon fell on Monday night. The collapse was provoked by soil erosion caused by the torrential rains that have been falling in northern Mozambique.
According to an EDM statement, technical teams are working on the ground to repair the damage. However, access to the fallen pylon is difficult, particularly as rain is continuing to fall.
Cyclone Gezani
Meanwhile, in the south of the country, tropical cyclone Gezani is approaching the coast of Inhambane province. On current projections of the cyclone’s route, the storm will brush past the coastal city of Maxixe, but will not actually make landfall anywhere in Mozambique.
According to the US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC), Gezani’s current wind speed is 90 knots (about 170 kilometres an hour). The cyclone’s intensity is forecast to increase to 95 knots by the weekend.
Also by Saturday, Gezani is likely to change direction and head eastwards, moving away from the Mozambican coast.
